 Dr. Robert L. Hirsch is a Senior Energy Advisor at Management Information Services, Inc. (MISI) and a consultant in energy, technology, and management. He has extensive background in most areas of energy and has spoken to hundreds of groups with widely varying interests – Financial, technological, and education, as well as to the lay public. Recent presentations were to such groups as Ziff Investments, the Congressional House Science and Technology Committee, the Global Futures Forum, ASEE Engineering Research Council, the Society of Automotive Engineers, Brandes Investments, Walter Scott Investments, the University of Illinois engineering school, Sandia National Laboratories, the Energy Subcommittee of the Virginia Legislature, the CSPI National Conference on Integrity in Science, the DOE Laboratory Energy Research and Development Working Group, the Clean Technology Conference, the California Regional Energy Task Force, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute, BAE Systems, and the Atlantic Council.
Hirsch has published widely on such subjects as world oil production, mitigation of world oil shortages, energy planning, the limits of worldwide energy resources, ammunition for the energy wars, electric power from renewable energy, fusion power, large-scale green power, and the benefits of applied research and development. He is the principal author of the report Peaking of World Oil Production: Impacts, Mitigation, and Risk Management, which was written for the United States Department of Energy.
With Dr. James Schlesinger, former Energy Secretary, he recently coauthored an OpEd in the Washington Post entitled “Getting Real on Wind and Solar.”
Hirsch’s professional experience spans oil and natural gas exploration and production, petroleum refining, synthetic fuels, fusion, fission, renewables, defense technologies, chemical analysis, and basic research.

Vice President and Manager of Research and Technical Services for Atlantic Richfield Co. (Oil and gas exploration and production technology).
Founder and CEO of APTI, now a $70 million/year company owned by BAE Systems. (Commercial & Defense Department technologies).
Manager of Exxon’s synthetic fuels research laboratory.
Manager of Petroleum Exploratory Research at Exxon. (Refining R & D).
Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) responsible for renewables, fusion, geothermal and basic research. (Presidential Appointment).
Director of fusion research at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the Energy Research and Development Administration.
Hirsch has served on advisory committees for government and industry. He holds 15 patents and has over 50 publications in energy. He is past Chairman of the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems of the National Research Council, the operating arm of the National Academies and has served on a number of National Research Council committees covering such subjects as solar energy, conservation, coal, oil and gas, hydrogen, and alternate vehicle technology options.
His recognitions include National Associate of the National Academies, University of Michigan Alumni Society Merit Award, Eminent Engineer of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honorary, University of Illinois Alumni Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering, American Nuclear Society Outstanding Achievement Award, Distinguished Fellow of the Center for Theoretical Studies, University of Miami, Fusion Power Associates Leadership Award, ERDA Special Achievement Award, AEC Distinguished Service Award, William A. Jump Memorial Foundation Meritorious Award, & AEC Special Fellowship in Nuclear Science and Engineering.
